Being a green company is an integral part of Brandrud’s culture and business plan. We are proactive about sustainability, in that we go beyond just recycling, reducing, and re-using. Here’s how:
Wherever possible we make sure that the materials used in manufacturing our products are either recycled or made from sustainable sources. Alternative materials used in nonstructural elements include particleboard, wheat board (made from straw), Dakota burl (made from sunflower seed shells), and even cardboard. Our goal is to always strive to increase the percentage of sustainable materials content in our furniture.
In addition, we emphasize procuring materials from suppliers who share our ethic of sustainability. We buy hardwood that comes from sustainable alder forests, which are native to our Pacific Northwest. For plywood, we follow the guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), certified by audits from PriceWaterhouse, the Sierra Club, and Greenpeace for having among the world’s most sustainable products.
Another area is the responsibility we take for the waste by-product of our manufacturing process. At least 85% of the waste we create goes to elsewhere to help create another product. That is a significantly greater percentage than larger manufacturers in our industry. For example, foam scraps go to carpet padding manufacturers, wood chips fuel a nearby energy plant, sawdust finds use in a local dairy as bedding in cow stalls, and our fabric scraps go to sundry nonprofits, nursing homes, and schools. To minimize creating waste in the first place, we try to avoid boxing our products in cardboard. Rather, we blanket wrap product shipments and only work with shipping companies that are equipped for this method.
Of course, we design all our products to last, so that they can be disassembled and recycled when the need arises. As we learn more, we will continue to grow our sustainability methods incrementally, always striving to embed new practices, even if they are not the simplest and least costly choices.
